Internal Checks

An Internal Check is a check on the Scouts system, when someone takes on a new role. It forms part of the Personal Enquiry and used to be known as a Confidential Enquiry (CE) Check.

From 24 October

  • No new volunteers or roles should be added to Compass.

During Compass Freeze (from 7 November)

  • While Compass is offline, Internal Checks will not be able to be completed.
  • A list of outstanding checks will be held by UKHQ to help liaise with Lead Volunteers about these members should any queries come up.
  • Volunteers who wish to join the movement while Compass is offline, and volunteers changing roles, will have to be added to the digital system after Go-Live so their Internal Check(s) can be processed.

From Go-Live (From 21 November for Early Adopters and from 28 November for everyone else)

  • Any outstanding Internal Checks will be processed automatically.
  • New volunteers and new roles can be added to the new digital system.

References

When a volunteer starts with Scouts, we ask them to give us details of at least two referees. These are used to confirm their suitability to hold a role in Scouts.

Before Compass Freeze (until 6 November)

  • All references must be completed and recorded on Compass.
  • Any references which aren’t recorded on Compass before it goes offline (including if only one of the two references has been recorded) will have to be requested again through the new system.

During Compass Freeze (from 7 November)

  • References must no longer be requested as they cannot be recorded.
  • Volunteers without complete references may continue to participate in Scouts activities but must be supervised at all times when with young people and will not be allowed to attend nights away events.

From Go-Live (From 21 November for Early Adopters and from 28 November for everyone else)

  • References must be requested and completed through the new system.
  • References will only be required for new volunteers or volunteers taking on a new role when their current/previous role doesn’t require a reference.

HQ requested references

When a criminal record check is returned with possible issues, additional references are requested directly by HQ to confirm a volunteer’s suitability to hold a role in Scouts.

Before Compass Freeze (until 6 November)

  • All processes continue as normal.

During Compass Freeze (from 7 November)

  • The vetting process will be paused at the reference stage for new members and will continue when the new system is live. The new member will be informed of this.

From Go-Live (From 21 November for Early Adopters and from 28 November for everyone else)

  • Any references requested by HQ will be carried out through the new system.
