Sports

In sport activities, Muslim Scouts can reflect on the importance of being active and looking after their body, as a gift from Allah.

There are also some specific sports that the Prophet is said to have recommended and encouraged. These include swimming, archery and horse riding.

It's also an opportunity to learn about and celebrate some of the many successful Muslim athletes, such as:

  • Muhammad Ali, a very famous American boxer.
  • Ibtihaj Muhammad, a sabre fencer, known for being the first American woman to complete in the Olympics wearing a hijab.
  • Mo Farah, a long distance runner and one of the most successful Olympians for Team GB.
  • Nawal El Moutawakel, the first female Muslim athlete to ever win an Olympic gold medal. She won the 400 m hurdles in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, thus making her mark in history.
  • Mo Salah, a fantastic footballer who plays for Liverpool and captains the Egypt national team.

Reflection questions

  • Why is it important to look after our bodies?
  • How can we keep being healthy?
  • What are your favourite sports to do?
  • What sports would you like to try that you haven't yet?

Take benefit of five before five: Your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before you are preoccupied, and your life before your death.
