Responding to the floods in Spain: Showing our solidarity

Share

Like so many other Scouts across the world, we’ve seen the devastating scenes following the torrential rain and floods in Valencia and other areas of Spain.

Over 200 people have lost their lives, with others unaccounted for. Thousands are still without running water, electricity or communications.

All our thoughts are with the people and Scouts in Spain at this hugely challenging time, and especially with the families of those who have lost loved ones.

Scouts in Spain have stepped up to provide humanitarian assistance. Their selflessness is an example to all of us in the global family, and you're truly living your promise to help other people.

Our Lead Volunteer for International, Rob Murray, and UK Lead Volunteer Carl Hankinson have written to Federación de Escultismo en España to express our solidarity and support.

The image shows the devastating impact of floods in Spain. There are cards covered in mud and raise off the ground and destroyed, with the road covered in thick mud. To the left are apartment buildings with people gathered in the streets.

How British Scouting Overseas are supporting

We’ve checked in with British Scouting Overseas Scout Groups and Explorer Units. While they’ve not been directly affected by the catastrophic floods, they have been reaching out to offer help to the Spanish Scouts.

  • 1st Majadahonda have helped load emergency supply trucks.
  • 1st Madrid have organised a bring and buy sale to raise funds for the disaster fund.
  • 1st Alicante have collected dog food and supplies to pass on to the pet charities.
  • 1st Fuengirola are sending camping equipment to the Scout Groups in the worst affected areas.

These are just some of their great efforts.

As a District, we've sent our thoughts to the Scout Lead Volunteers for both Spanish Scout Associations. We're in the process of setting up a book of condolences on our District website where young people, leaders and the public can leave message of support to the survivors and people who've had their lives affected by the floods.

Kenny Lee – District Lead Volunteer, Southern Europe for British Scouting Overseas.

The people and Scouts of the UK have a special relationship with Spain, with so many of us visiting each year. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our fellow Scouts as they cope with the aftermath of these events and rebuild their communities.
