Why we're backing Dr Callum Kaye to join the World Scout Committee

This August, the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) meets in Egypt to elect the 12 people who’ll serve on the World Scout Committee. We’re backing Callum, our Chief Volunteer for International (International Commissioner), to join the team and contribute his experience in engaging with National Scout Organisations all around the world (and here in the UK).

So what is the World Scout Committee? It sounds very grand, but as the name suggests, it's the board of World Scouting, responsible for supporting the 174 National Scout Organisations (NSOs) across the world and delivering the world level strategy. UK Scouts’ last committee member was Craig Turpie (Deputy UK Chief Volunteer) who finished his term in 2021.

Why we’re getting involved

As UK Chief Volunteer, I’ve enjoyed speaking with volunteers, many from NSOs as well as from around the UK in recent months. I’ve taken seriously the encouragement that UK Scouts should nominate a candidate for election.

We believe WOSM has some significant opportunities in the coming years, including the transition from the current Strategy for Scouting, to the next. Representatives from NSOs will discuss and agree this when they meet at the Conference in Egypt.

Re-energising Scouts

A successful transition is vital to re-energising the World Scout Movement, so all NSOs can continue to develop and grow. We’ll need a World Scout Committee made up of exceptional people who have a good understanding of the diverse needs and expectations of the worldwide movement. That’s why I’m so pleased UK Scouts is nominating Dr. Callum Kaye as a candidate for election to the World Scout Committee.

Callum is stood outside and in front of green leaves. He's looking at the camera with his arms by his sides, wearing a red, white and navy necker and a navy Scouts polo shirt.

Why Callum, and why now?

Callum is known to many as our International Commissioner, a role he’s held for five years. He’s highly respected across the movement and is ready to lend his experience to serve and support members across the world.

Not only has Callum served in a variety of governance and oversight roles, he’s a long standing member of our International Team. Through that, he’s collaborated closely with many NSOs and World Scout Regions. He’s also ably served on strategy groups and has been a key leader supporting me in our UK Leadership Team.

We believe Callum has the necessary skills and experience to make a positive contribution to the leadership of our movement through the World Scout Committee.

‘As International Commissioner, Callum’s done a brilliant job,’ says Bear Grylls, Chief Scout. ‘It’s a pleasure to see him going for this role. They’ll be lucky to have you.’
