Scouts contributing to the Coronation and The Big Help Out across the nations

Our involvement on the Coronation day 

Scout volunteers from across the UK and the Commonwealth have been nominated to help during the Coronation Day in London. 

They’ll be stepping up to help people get around and make the best of their day. Around 50 young people are representing Scouts at a special screening of the Coronation Service at St Margaret’s Church in Westminster.  

We’re incredibly proud to support so many people visiting London on this historic day. It's an opportunity for us to reflect on how we serve our communities and help others, which is central to our Scouts promise. 

Scotland 

In Greenock, 25 miles west of Glasgow, a local Scout group is inviting their community to join them for The Big Help Out over the Coronation weekend.  

The Scouts themselves are serving cream teas to mark the occasion, and they’re inviting their community to try Scout activities, including climbing, archery, and outdoor cooking.  

Greenock’s population is very diverse, with their residents coming from all over the world. Their event this weekend is the perfect opportunity to bring their community together. They’re hoping to introduce people to Scouts and give them a chance to talk about volunteering. 

Northern Ireland 

All over Northern Ireland, Scout groups are getting together to celebrate the Coronation and lend a hand for The Big Help Out.  

Fermanagh are putting on an event at Enniskillen Castle where there will be bushcraft, marshmallow roasting, and climbing. 1st Saintfield Scout Group are partnering with the National Trust for an event at Rowallane, and Londonderry County are hosting an event in Portrush where they’ll be inviting the public to try a slime factory, ice cream making and a treasure hunt! 

All the events are aiming to inspire people to try something new, give Scouting a go and help bring more volunteers into the movement. 

England 

Birmingham is home to Natesai’s Scout group, 211th Birmingham Scouts. They’re busy packaging boxes of food and sweets to help the homeless for The Big Help Out. 

Natesai says, ‘I come from Thailand where everyone knows about Scouts, but in the UK, not everyone knows what we are and why we do it.  

Volunteering is a great opportunity to gain more skills, be a role model to younger Scouts, and become more generous to others. It’d be an honour to help get the message across to people that volunteering can be fun and make a difference.  

I chose to help the homeless for The Big Help Out, because my children and I have been through that state of life and we continued in Scouts despite it.’ 

Natesai, 211th Birmingham Scouts 

Wales 

A group in North Wales are helping the Blind Veterans in Llandudno.  

At 6th Colwyn Bay (The Heights), 17 young people, from Beavers to Scouts, have put their hands up to help in any way they can from 10am to 3pm on Monday.  

The Scouts will be in uniform and ITV Wales will be there to celebrate the occasion. It’s also a great opportunity to recruit volunteers, as the Scouts will show the public some Scouts activities. They’ll be doing knotting, as well as a spring flowers activity, which they’ve already run at their local care home.  

The group is a fantastic example of our Scout values. They’re truly showing the impact Scouts can have on communities and young people.
