It’s all in the name

Get active with these bug themed actions. How will you move?

Back to Activities

  1. Everyone should stand in a circle
  1. Everyone should think of a bug and an action to represent it. For example, people could flap their arms like a butterfly’s wings, wriggle like a worm, or jump like a grasshopper.
  1. The person leading the activity should choose one person to start; that person should say the name of the bug they chose and do their bug action.
  2. Everyone should repeat the bug’s name and copy the action.
  3. The person who showed their action should then choose the next person to show their action.
  4. Everyone should repeat steps three to five until everyone who wants a turn has had one.

Reflection

This game gave everyone the chance to independently think of a bug and share their ideas with everyone.

After they’ve played the game, everyone should chat about some reflection questions, for example:

  • Was it difficult to think of a bug?
  • What was everyone’s favourite action? Why was it their favourite?

Safety

All activities must be safely managed. You must complete a thorough risk assessment and take appropriate steps to reduce risk. Use the safety checklist to help you plan and risk assess your activity. Always get approval for the activity, and have suitable supervision and an InTouch process.

  • Some people might struggle to think of a bug and an action. The people leading the game should think of some ideas that they can use to prompt people.
  • Make it more difficult by asking everyone to think of a bug to match the first letter of their name (did you know about the zebra swallowtail butterfly?).

Everyone should be involved in the game – the person leading the game should support everyone to think of actions that are accessible for everyone.

All Scout activities should be inclusive and accessible.
