Interview a collector

Take part in this question and answer session by discussing your favourite things in your collection.

Back to Activities

You’ll need

  • Coloured pens or pencils
  • Collections
A Scout showing off their impressive teapot and teacup collection to their fellow Scouts.

Your collection has won an award. You’re going to be interviewed by the press and have been asked to talk about one of your favourite objects from your collection.

The interview

  1. Get the group to divide into pairs: one will be the collector; the other the interviewer.
  2. Participants should look at the collections, and the interviewer ask the collector questions such as:
    • Which is your favourite object from your collection?
    • What is your favourite thing about the object?
    • Where did you get it?
    • Does it have a function? What does it do?
    • Is it rare?
  1. Ask them to swap around their roles, so both participants have a chance to ask and answer questions.
  2. As a group, discuss: What was the most interesting thing you found out about the other person’s collection?
  • How many of the items do you have?
  • How long have you been collecting them?
  • What is your favourite item?
  • How do you store your collection?
  • What is the oldest item in your collection?
  • What was the first item you collected?
  • Why do you collect these items?
  • What is the rarest item you've found?
  • What would be your ideas if someone wanted to start collecting this item?

Reflection

This activity requires you to explain what it is about your collections that you like, and why you’ve collected them. How easy do you find it to explain why you like things? Is it easy talking about something you’re interested in? Was it nice to hear about other collections? Think about one new thing you found out today.

Safety

All activities must be safely managed. You must complete a thorough risk assessment and take appropriate steps to reduce risk. Use the safety checklist to help you plan and risk assess your activity. Always get approval for the activity, and have suitable supervision and an InTouch process.

Learn a little about someone else's collection and then try to answer questions about it.

For those less comfortable with answering questions in this way, they could make a poster showing their object.

All Scout activities should be inclusive and accessible.

Imagine you are making a documentary and create a storyboard for a scene that describes your object.
