Strength in Solidarity

05/08/2011

Three UK Units have been joined by Patrols from overseas for all the fun of the Jamboree as part of the Solidarity project.

The Project enables three patrols of nine Scouts and one leader from Sierra Leone, Armenia and Papua New Guinea to attend the event and enjoy a fantastic experience as part of the UK Contingent.

'Friends for life'

Units from Dorset and Leicestershire have been camping with them and becoming inseparable.

Rebecca from Dorset said ‘It’s great. I feel like we are really getting to know each other and learning so much about each other’s cultures. The guys from Sierra Leone feel like family now and we’ll be friends for life.’

Other UK units are joined by some of our overseas branches, with the mid-Wales unit being joined by Scouts from the Caribbean.

Curtis from Antigua said: ‘I’m learning so much about Scouting from the people I am camping with, the food takes some getting used to but I made them some spicy chicken and rice and everyone liked it.’

Cultural activity

Different types of food were also to the fore at the Festival of Cultures. Scouts shared their worlds through national dress, music, dance and dishes.

Yorkshire pudding, Welsh cakes, haggis, Lancashire hot pot and fish and chips were on the menu for visitors to the UK area.

They were also treated to Morris dancing, cheese rolling, bagpipes and local crafts.

Meanwhile, UK Scouts took the opportunity to try sushi, noodles, pasta and vegi-mite elsewhere.

Charles from Hertfordshire said ‘It’s great to walk around the site and learn so much about different countries. Today has shown me how amazing Scouting is, how global it is and I have learnt so much about the countries involved.

The day ended with a massive carnival procession throughout the Jamboree site as Scouts, bedecked in flags and national dress, headed to the main arena for a music festival.
