A day in the life

04/08/2011

Scouts from all over the UK, many of whom are camping in Sweden or Denmark have been popping in to the Jamboree as day visitors all week.

Scouts from Nuneaton, Lancashire, Warwickshire, Northumberland and Greater London to name a few, have been among those getting involved in the Jamboree experience.

Many race to the sub-camps to find friends and family. Others take a leisurely stroll to take in the culture.

International highlights

Jane, an Explorer Scout Leader from West Lancashire, summed up the mood:

‘When you sign up to become a leader you never imagine that you could be doing anything like this. I never realised that Scouting could be like this and that it is so global. This is a day that I will never forget. Where do I sign up for the Japan Jamboree?’

Scouts from Torquay were also certainly enjoying their experience on the Continent. Shannon said: ‘We have had a great camp in Denmark and done lots of activities but this is the highlight for me.’

The global bond of Scouting has also been amply demonstrated by ShelterBox who came to the rescue of French Polynesian Scouts at the Jamboree.

Commonwealth people

Elsewhere, Scouts from across the Commonwealth met in the UK Pavilion to discuss issues that affect young people in the Commonwealth. Around 30 per cent of the world’s population live in the 54 Commonwealth countries and half of those people are under 25.

The UK is due to host a youth forum for Scouts from Commonwealth Countries next year to coincide with the Queen’s Jubilee. The gathering at the Jamboree gave Scouts the opportunity to discuss potential themes for the forum.

Commonwealth flags were distributed at the end so people can identify Commonwealth countries.
