Food for thought

A small corner of Sweden is offering UK Scouts a taste of home.
Scouts from Yorkshire have built a Medieval Castle in the middle of the Jamboree site. This is where you can find the UK Food House. The aim of the food houses is to allow different nationalities to share food and their culture.
Traditional fare
Graham Earnshaw, a leader from Hudderfield is leading the project: ‘We are building castle battlements and a courtyard with a fire pit. From the kitchen we are serving full breakfasts, lunchtime soups and pies with mushy peas. In the evening we are serving hot roast beef and chips.’
And it’s proving to be quite a hit with queues stretching out the door, with the constant rain adding an extra authentic touch to the experience.
Worth the wait
Tom, Joseph and Edward from Solihull were munching through chips, a bacon sandwich and some ginger cake with a pot of tea.
‘We are amazed that the food house is still open. The others have closed for the afternoon, but in true British style they battle on regardless. We queued up for 20 minutes and it was worth every minute.’
The food house also provided an appropriate backdrop to the leaders' reception.
Culture swap
With live bands, chess and even croquet, the food house not only offers the UK Contingent a taste of home, but Scouts from all over the world can experience UK culture.
The aptly-named great hall, filled with shields, coats of arms and banners, is hugely popular.
Aquila from Brazil was certainly converted: ‘I love English tea, it’s the first time I have tried it. I want more.’
