Cub Scouts Pack into Parliament
07/06/2011
A group of Cub Scouts held the first ever Pack meeting in Parliament to promote Volunteers’ Week.
MPs became Cub Scout Leaders for the day as Cubs from across the UK took part in the first ever Cub Pack meeting at the Palace of Westminster.
The event was part of our drive to promote the benefits of volunteering to adults, and coincided with Volunteers’ Week (1–7 June). MPs worked with 12 leaders to help the Cub Scouts enjoy a range of activities, including pitching a tent and going on a blindfold trail.
Cub Scouts in attendance included Heidi, 10, from Castle Rock in Northern Ireland. She has already gained all 33 activity badges. ‘My favourite is the Astronomer Badge; I had to learn about the stars and planets. I love Cubs, especially the camping.’
Putting MPs through their paces
The meeting was led by Cub Scout Leader Jenny Thorp, a teacher from Enfield, who said ‘Scouting is one of the best things I’ve done. Whether you’re planning a camp or leading an activity, you’re constantly being challenged.’
The MPs were encouraged to join in with parachute games and helped instruct the Cubs in building a bridge out of spaghetti and marshmallows.
Kelvin Hopkins MP enjoyed the challenge. ‘It was great working in a team with the Cubs. Volunteering with the Scouts is a great way of hearing young people’s ideas and I will continue to encourage more adults in Luton to get involved.’
Through our adult training programme, Scouting provides the UK with training worth an estimated £5.5m every year. The MPs at the event were able to see first-hand the benefits that volunteering has had on the lives of leaders, and how the skills they learn can be used in the workplace.
Great on the CV
Volunteering with Scouting also helps people with their careers. Roxhana Patell, an Assistant Cub Scout Leader from Bedford, was watching her Cubs play bingo with map symbols. ‘I was out of work, and looking for something that would fill my time and help me get back into employment. I joined my local Cub Pack and have gained a lot of confidence and skills. Scouting looks great on my CV and has helped me move into a career teaching English as a foreign language.’
