Deputy UK Chief Commissioner

The role

This an exciting opportunity for a volunteer to help support and lead Scouting across the UK. There are two Deputy UK Chief Commissioners, each focussing on different aspects. This role will particularly focus on the realisation of our strategy and will have a wide remit including representing the Scouts and the national team by speaking at a range of events and leading some of our initiatives and projects.

The Deputy UK Chief Commissioner will play an active part in Team UK, led by the UK Chief Commissioner, to debate and inform important aspects of the Scout’s work alongside Chief Commissioners, the International Commissioner and UK Commissioners.

The Deputy UK Chief Commissioner will be expected to work in partnership with staff across the Headquarters team and will be a member of the following groups:

  • Programme Management Group (a committee that oversees the scheduling and resources for the realisation of our strategy);
  • Headquarters Operations Committee (a committee of the Board of Trustees that oversees the operational aspects of the Movement);
  • Safety Committee (a committee of the Board of Trustees that focuses on safety matters); and
  • Team UK.

The process of supporting the UK Chief Commissioner in making an appointment to the role is undertaken by a search group. The search group is keen to receive applications for the role from a wide range of people.

When completing the application form please provide as much relevant information as possible as this will assist the search group in considering who may be best suited for the role. Please refer to the role description and address each of the items listed in the person specification to help the search group understand how you meet the requirements of the role. It may be helpful to include experiences outside of Scouting that are relevant to the role such as in professional or other volunteer capacities.

Please note that the search group is interested in you providing evidence of your personal contribution to activities and achievements as well as how you worked with others.

Applications will be considered on the answers to all the questions on the application form together with the general style of the application. Depending on the number of applications and the suitability of applications, not every applicant will be shortlisted for the selection event.

The search group will create a shortlist of candidates for a formal selection event. We expect to include a group Q&A session and presentation together with a formal interview. Further details will be provided to shortlisted applicants.


Key dates

The closing date for applications is Sunday 3 November at midnight.

Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the shortlisting process shortly after 15 November.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a selection event on Sunday 8 December in London and full details of this will be provided to shortlisted applicants.
