New UK Youth Commissioner starting in September

We are delighted to announce that Ollie Wood will be joining Team UK as the new UK Youth Commissioner.

As the second person to occupy the role, he will be taking over from the current UK Youth Commissioner, Hannah Kentish, in September.

Ollie discovered Scouting in January 2000, joining the Beaver colony at 2nd Longton Scout Group aged six. Since then, he’s moved through the sections as a young person and then a volunteer in several local and national roles.

In 2015, he became the UK’s first County Youth Commissioner for West Lancashire, leading county expeditions to Mongolia and China, and growing his own troop from four to 40 in his role as a Scout Section Leader.

Outside Scouting, Ollie is a keen skier and hiker with a background in engineering. Having launched his own company in early 2018 at the age of 24, he attributes much of his career confidence to his earlier experiences within the movement.

‘Without Scouting, I wouldn't have had the initiative, skills or experience to make such a move so early in my career. Scouting has given me so many opportunities and memories, undoubtedly helping me to achieve much more than I would have otherwise. In my new role, I’m excited to help our members work towards our new plan, and to build on the excellent work of Hannah Kentish and team.

Most importantly, I’m excited to see Youth Shaped Scouting become further embedded in all that we do, at all levels. I hope every young person in our movement gets regular opportunities to take on responsibilities in a safe space, building confidence and developing life skills along the way.’

Speaking on Ollie’s appointment, UK Chief Commissioner Tim Kidd said: ‘I’m really excited to welcome Ollie onto Team UK and look forward to working with him as we build on the brilliant Youth Shaped work that has been undertaken over the past four years.’
