News | Explorer Scouts to represent the UK at European and World Rafting Championships

Teamgb Blog

Competing against other talented rafting teams from across the country, Romford Explorer Scouts Emily Smith (15) and Katie Pidgeon (16) have worked hard to earn their place in Team GB.

Emily and Katie have been selected as part of the Great Britain Under 19 Women’s Rafting Team for 2017/18. The girls completed a series of rafting challenges and competed against teams from across the country at a selection weekend in Nottingham. They are part of the Lee Valley Devils rafting team that have been asked to represent the UK in the European and World Championships in Georgia and Japan. Katie told us how it feels to have been chosen: ‘To represent the UK and be going to Georgia and Japan is just amazing. We still can’t believe it’s happening!’

The lead up to the European and World Championships will be filled with intense training. Both Emily and Katie hope to use their rafting experience for the physical section for their DofE awards.

The girls have only been practicing the sport for a couple of years, making their success even more impressive. Emily told us how Scouting skills have supported them in their journey so far: ‘Scouting has taught us that teamwork is really important, whether it’s while taking part in our Chief Scout and DofE expeditions or while rafting. We’re thankful to have had so much support from the leaders and other Explorer Scouts’.

We’re incredibly excited to follow the team’s rafting challenges over the next couple of years and wish them the very best of luck!
