Activity| Play the skate and cup race
Make good use of the tarmac near your Scout Hut with this thrilling and sloppy skateboarding game.
You will need
- Knee and elbow pads.
- Plastic cups.
- A whistle.
Caution! When it’s dark, it’s best to play this game in a heavily lit area.
What to do
To set up the race, mark out lanes and place the empty buckets at the start and finish line. Then fill the buckets at the start line with water.
Split the section into teams according to the number of lanes you’ve marked out. Give each team a skateboard, helmets, plastic cups, and knee and elbow pads.
Have the team line up in single file behind the start line. When the whistle is blown, the first person in line fills their cup with water from their bucket and uses the skateboard to skate to the finish line.
Once at the finish line, they have to pour the cup of water into the empty bucket and skate back to their team to swap places with the next person in line.
The aim of the game is to fill the empty bucket at the finish line with water before the whistle is blown to end the game.
The winning team is the one that manages to transport the most water into their bucket.
Make it harder
Use makers as obstacles for the skaters to go around. If the skater misses a marker, send them back to the start line to begin their turn again.
Take it further
Encourage your Scouts and Explorers to achieve their Street Sports Activity Badge by introducing them to skateboarding as a sport. Information on the Scout badge can be found here and the Explorer badge can be found here
If you’re a part of the Scout Network, why not think about setting up a project where you organise a skateboarding instructor to tutor Groups local to you? You can find a list of skate parks near to you here.
