News | MBE awarded to Scout Leader in Queen's Birthday Honours

Scout leader Amir Cheema has been awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to the Scout movement and within the Muslim community in the UK.

Life-enhancing opportunities

Amir has worked tirelessly for the last 16 years to ensure the development of Scouting within the Muslim community. Thanks to his hard work establishing the first Muslim Scout Fellowship, over 20 Scout Groups have opened across the UK.

Amir began volunteering at Scouts after seeing the life-enhancing opportunities his own children benefited from. Now, he travels across the country helping develop new Groups by providing training to communities who might just be getting Scouting established.

'A massive privilege'

Thanks to Amir, lots of young people have been able to become part of the movement who might otherwise not have been able to. Locally, in Bristol, Amir has helped membership grow significantly and has launched an adventurous activities provision for young people.

Mr Cheema said: ‘It's a massive privilege to accept this award on behalf of the fantastic volunteers from the Muslim Scout Fellowship and my Brunel Scout District, who work tirelessly to help young people experience the adventure of a lifetime. Helping young people grow and develop through adventurous, fun and purposeful activity is the best way to develop a peaceful and productive society. I would love to see all young people develop to be their best.'

Wayne Bulpitt, The Scout Association’s UK Chief Commissioner, said: ‘Amir is a beacon of how we can integrate different communities with each other to give young people a balanced programme of Scouting, which is as successful today as it was when the Movement was founded 108 years ago. He gives his time, his expertise and his passion to so many others.'

As well as Amir, The Scout Association would like to congratulate all those who received awards in this year's Birthday Honours.
