Scouts speak up at party conference

Scouts took the opportunity to have their say and quiz MPs at the Liberal Democrat Party Conference in Glasgow yesterday. The event was part of the Scouts Speak Up programme, which empowers young people to become active citizens and discuss the issues they care about. It was run in partnership with the British Youth Council.

Lively debates

Interviewed by BBC presenter Evan Davies (pictured above), the young people discussed a wide range of issues with the MPs. There were lively debates about topics ranging from the environment to the role of young people in sport and outdoor activities.

Explorer Scout James Ferguson said: 'I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the MPs and telling them about all the positive things we can do in Scouting to change society for the better.'

Valued contribution

Chief Scout Bear Grylls commented: 'Events like this are really important for Scouts who are looking to make change happen. I want members to feel empowered to fulfil their dreams and ambitions, value the contribution they make to our communities and to feel proud of everything they do.'

The next Scouts Speak Up events will be held on 22 September at the Labour Party conference in Brighton and on 29 September at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester.
