District Commissioner for the Early Years Programme Board

Independent research suggests that the earlier a young person accesses non-formal education, the more positive the impact on their prospects.

In our strategy, Skills for Life, we promised to explore bringing Scouting to early years and we have now secured external funding for us to pilot three different models of delivery. We wish to see if we can:

  • Increase the number of young people benefiting from Scouting
  • Increase young people in Scouting from currently underrepresented backgrounds
  • Increase recruitment and retention of adult volunteers, whilst avoiding impact to existing provision, through testing different models of delivery

We are searching for a District Commissioner to join our Early Years Programme Board. The Programme Board supports the lead staff member and the lead volunteer in setting the programme’s direction, making decisions and tracking progress. It also helps in deciding how to respond to any unforeseen challenges or changes to the plans.

This role is a volunteer member of the board and we are looking specifically for a District Commissioner who has an excellent understanding of the administration and delivery of Scouting. District Commissioners with diverse backgrounds, experiences, ability and perspectives are encouraged to apply.

As our funder is particularly interested in exploring impact in areas of deprivation, applicants with experience in these areas are particularly encouraged.

How to apply

Please fill in this application form and send it to claire.bruce@scouts.org.uk by no later than Sunday 24 February 2019. Please make sure that you read the application pack, and specifically the experience section (page 8&9) and make it clear in your application which specific skills or experiences you have, as well as how you meet the wider role requirements.

Key dates

The closing date for applications and nominations is Sunday 24 February 2019.

Dependent on numbers of applications, phone interviews may take place on Monday 11, Tuesday 12 or Wednesday 13 March (day and evening times will be available). Please ensure that you provisionally hold these dates when applying.

If you are successful, there will be a full day Board Meeting on Sunday 12 May at Gilwell Park. If possible, please ensure that you hold this date when applying.

Further information

If you would like any further information about the application process or the roles described in this pack, or would like an informal conversation before applying, please contact andrew.bollington@scouts.org.uk.

Please note: This piece of work is currently piloting early years provision. Groups do not have permission to start early years provision outside of these pilots. Unofficial provision is against our rules, could affect the pilots and is not insured. We will keep you updated on our progress and whether there will be a wider roll-out in the future.
