Could your Scout building save you money?

20/09/2011

We are working with building research organisation BRE to investigate whether local Scouting can take advantage of the Government's Feed-In Tariff (FITs).

Under this scheme energy suppliers have to pay householders and communities who generate their own electricity from renewable or low carbon sources such as solar electricity panels (PV).

Create your own cash

We want to investigate whether Groups could take advantage of FITs and generate their own electricity and income.

We have created a quick questionnaire for you to self-survey your buildings for the suitability of PV systems. There are certain criteria that Scout buildings would have to meet to be eligible.

Site survey

To help us understand potential demand and identify eligible Groups, please download the site survey sheet and read through it before completing the questionnaire.

By taking part in this survey you are under no obligation to proceed with an installation.

Main factors

Key criteria for installation:

  • Critical to the success of a solar PV installation is to have a south facing roof that is un-shaded and is unlikely to be replaced in the next 25 years.
  • Certain roof coverings are also more suitable than others.
  • Ground mounted systems are also possible but are more difficult to secure planning permission.

If you have any questions about this survey please contact the fundraising team.

What a fab idea. We have already discussed this, but can't proceed as our lease is up in 2014 - we own the building and lease the land from the local authority.

yes as rear extension behind hall is only heated by electric convectors, not storage heaters

Yes we think solar energy is great, we have 21 units installed on Scout hall roof an in 10 wees we have produced over 1000 KWh of electricity.Chairman 1st Abbots Langley 3rd Watford North Scout Group.

Bryan - how did you get the funding for your units? Cannot find funders who will give money that would make the scouts a profit!

You do not provid ean option for electric radiant heating only
Have you considered next years HITS - similar to FITS but for Hot Water, would be possible to run underfloor heating potentially

A great idea hopefully we can take part as we have the backing of our Sponsoring Church to go ahead if we fit the criteria.

I've completed the questionnaire but have no opportunity to get feedback. It simply went to a screen stating I'd completed the questionnaire.

What happens next?

Whilst Solar PV claiming FIT's is one method of saving money on your energy billsm please don't forget that this is not a one stop fixes all. I am sceptical about some of the lease schemes around for PV at the moment and would suggest that money could equally be well spent of insulation in some of our older leaky buildings, and replacing old inefficient heating with a more efficient new system. If groups used Heat Pimps for their heating they would be eligable to claim Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Just some ramblings from an Energy Officer with in excess of 10 years working for some of the largest Hospital and local governments in the country reducing energy spends on energy budgets in excess of £9M
