Fundraising for the trip of a lifetime
Find out how one Scout Group is getting on as they fundraise for the trip of a lifetime…
Being part of Scouts is a hugely exciting and rewarding thing for boys and girls around the country, and beyond it! Sophie Ashing and her Group are raising money to take them to Peru, where they will be working with a charity to help benefit a Peruvian community.
Rather than raising money directly for the Peruvian Scout Group for resources they require, Sophie and her Explorer Scouts are hoping to fund the trip to Peru, where they will pool their skills and do some work for the local community.
The main part of their fundraising was to take part in the Southern 50 challenge, a 50km walk across the Chiltern Hills, after which the team members' family and friends donated to their Virgin Money Giving pages. The money will be collected by the Scout Group who will in turn use it to fund the trip.
Sophie tells us that her unit has gone on trips to Namibia before, so they decided to try to find a new location in which they could help.
Peruvian communities find that their dry conditions make it hard for them to grow food, so her Scout Group will build a thermal mass greenhouse for a local village to enable them to grow the food they need. The challenge is a great example of how fundraising is not only about raising money, but also about helping out with skills and time.
Sophie said: ‘Virgin Money Giving had been really good as I have been able to share our fundraising page link with people so that they can easily donate, making donations which can also include gift aid. We have collectively raised lots of money already and still have another year to reach our target.’
