Summit17 highlights from an inspiring weekend
Get a glimpse of the highlights from Summit17, a national conference that was all about delivering today, preparing for tomorrow and celebrating aall we’ve achieved so far.
This weekend, County/Area/Region/District and Youth Commissioners from across the UK gathered together for Summit17. The conference took place at Warwick University and was an amazing opportunity to share thoughts on how to support the delivery of quality Scouting and prepare for the Movement’s fantastic future.
As well as hearing from some inspirational speakers, the conference was a chance for delegates to feedback about how we can work together to effect real change, evaluate our priorities and plan Scouting's future beyond 2018.
It all kicked off on Saturday morning when Ann Limb, Chair of the Board of Trustees, opened the conference. She welcomed UK Chief Commissioner Tim Kidd, UK Youth Commissioner Hannah Kentish and Chief Executive Matt Hyde.
Keynote speaker Steve Radcliffe then took to the stage to discuss the setting and achieving of goals, as well as the important role Scouting plays in helping both volunteers and young people believe in themselves.
Director of Communications David Hamilton then stepped up to share insights on public perceptions of Scouting, before delegates gathered into smaller groups to discuss ways to improve and support a quality Scout Programme.
After a lively panel debate on important issues facing young people today and how Scouting can support them, the Scouting for All Awards ceremony took place on Saturday evening. Presented by Scout Ambassador Steve Backshall, the awards celebrated outstanding achievements in each area of Vision 2018 – Youth Shaped, Inclusivity, Growth and Community Impact. After Saturday night’s celebrations, Sunday morning started bright and early. Following a plenary session on the vision Beyond 2018, delegates once again gathered into workshop groups before coming together again to share their feedback and to welcome Steve Backshall to the stage.
Welcomed with great applause, Scout Ambassador Steve Backshall delivered the second keynote speech of the weekend. Steve spoke about how proud he is of each and every volunteer, and shared some of the inspiring stories he’d heard over the weekend – an amazing way to end the conference.
