Activity | Mental health v. mental illness

As part of our A Million Hands campaign, we’re pledging to improve the lives of those who struggle with their mental health. Give your Scouts a simple introduction to mental health and discuss appropriate ways to talk about the topic with this task.

You will need:

  • Flipchart paper.
  • Pens.
  • Sticky notes.

What to do:

  1. Split your group into two teams and give each a piece of flipchart paper. Write ‘mental health’ on one and ‘mental illness’ on the other.
  2. Give the two teams sticky notes and ask them to write positive and negative terms that come to mind when they hear either term, which they can then stick onto their sheets.
  3. When finished, discuss the words and phrases they’ve written down. Consider which terms are appropriate/inappropriate and why. If your Scouts are reluctant to get started, you can add your own sticky notes to encourage them, even if they contain negative phrases, as you’ll debrief afterwards.

Over 95% of young people in Scouts think that improving the lives of others is an important part of Scouting. Register your interest in the A Million Hands campaign here.
