Chief Commissioner's Blog | A timely reminder
An evening spent celebrating the achievements of young people in Greenford and District, West London was a timely reminder of what Scouting is really about in its simplest form: fun, adventure and learning by doing.
An excited audience of families, friends and supporters witnessed numerous highlights throughout the event and enjoyed celebrating everyone’s achievements – from Beaver Scouts and Network members to those who achieved their Queen’s Scout Award and Explorer Belts.
There were great examples of amazing Scouting throughout the event: Explorers, Rebecca and Alex undertook their Explorer Belt in Austria while the 13th Southall (Network) embarked on a community project in a small village in India. While sharing their QSA journey, Dan and Ainsley did a great job of inspiring others to follow and thanked their leaders for the key roles they have played in motivating them along the way.
Several members of the District in the County Jamboree unit also took advantage of a captive audience to share what they’ve been up to (while also doing a little fundraising!).
The seeds of the journey that are sewn, from a Beaver to a young adult, and the benefits that Scouting plays at each stage of the journey was clear for all to see during the event, especially to the young people, their families and supporters.
It pays to advertise
Earlier that day, I took advantage of being at Gilwell and caught up with the CCs and GSLs taking part in a GSL Essentials course. This was run by the East of England Region for (fairly) recently-appointed GSLs to discuss our strategy and answer questions.
On a final note, we just enjoyed a couple of days in the Peak District; Julie is into crafts, so we followed signs to a craft fair. It was only when we were inside and greeted with a request for 10p each ‘for Scout funds’ that we realised we were in a Scout building! External signage and a display board visible (rather than B-P’s portrait) would have made it a great advert for what we’re about, especially as it was a popular facility for the community too!
I wanted to remind everyone to ensure that your HQ is a great shop window for all the great things you offer.
