Is there an upside to economic woes on the high street?

A couple of emails this week prompted Wayne to think about how we might use the tough economic climate on our high streets to our advantage and to help others.

It's been sad news for high streets this week as reports announced the demise of three retailers.

However, Nick Wood-Dow of 6th Staines emailed me to highlight the benefits of using the windows of empty shops to advertise Scouting. This is very much a win-win, as empty shops are otherwise a demoralising sign for the local community and fellow retailers.

On sharing this with my wife, Julie, she mentioned that Guernsey was looking at going a step further and using one empty shop for a sleepover during Scout Community Week and turning it into a temporary recruitment centre to promote Scouting and to recruit adults and young people.

Both of these ideas build on the positive role that Scouting plays in preparing young people for the work place and engaging and motivating people that may be out of work.

Take a look around your high street and local community and see how you could perhaps brighten it up and promote Scouting at the same time.
