Scout campaign gains momentum
Our new campaign to protect Scout Groups from unreasonable rent increases has received a fantastic response. Group leaders, volunteers, young people, and local and national media have been quick to spread the message: Don’t Raise Our Rents!
Show your support
Your Scout Group could be just one of the thousands which are currently threatened by large rises in the rates charged by local councils. If you want to check if you’re affected, or support those who are, sign the petition on the Don’t Raise Our Rents! website.
You can also download a special toolkit to help you run a local campaign. David Moreton, 1st Raunds Scout Group in Northamptonshire, is just one leader who is encouraging his local authority to think again.
‘In the last year the hourly rent charged to my Scout Group by the county council has risen by 50 per cent. We know times are tough but all we want is rent which is fair and reasonable – these new charges are neither.’
Valuable voluntary work
Chief Scout Bear Grylls was among the first to speak up.
‘These crippling rises jeopardise the future of Scouting and the enormous amount of voluntary work we provide to communities week-in, week-out
‘We’re not asking for money. We simply ask that they continue to recognise the importance of Scouting in their area. I hope that all those Groups affected will get involved in this campaign and help their local councils see sense.’
