New additions to the National Scout Activity Centre family
Great Tower, situated in the Lake District, and Woodhouse Park, Bristol, are to join The Scout Association’s National Scout Activity Centres from 1 April 2011 offering new and exciting Scouting adventures.
Great Tower is an ideal base for activities including climbing, hill walking, sailing and canoeing as well as environmental studies. It is also a gateway to all the adventure that the Lake District has to offer.
In addition, the centre will develop its training provision so we can offer more activity permits and NGB qualifications.
Excellent activity base
Woodhouse Park is perfectly situated for expeditions to the Cotswolds, the Mendips and the Wye Valley. The camping grounds spread out over 36 acres and with indoor accommodation and facilities it offers an excellent location to develop our National Scout Activity Centre provision in the south west.
Both sites have been delivering residential and adventure activity opportunities to Scouting for many years and additional events are planned, increasing the breadth of activities for all sections to participate in.
‘Quality outdoor experiences’
The Scout Association aims to develop a network of Scout Activity Centres across the UK. Great Tower and Woodhouse Park will join the family of centres that includes Downe, Ferny Crofts, Gilwell Park, Hawkhirst and Youlbury, and move us closer to realising that goal.
UK Chief Commissioner, Wayne Bulpitt, the lead volunteer manager of UK Scouting, praised the quality of activities offered at the centres, saying,
‘All our national centres provide young people and adults, both members and non-members, with access to quality outdoor experiences and we will continue to offer a broad range of activities to promote Scouting as the leading UK provider of outdoor education. These latest additions and the significant investments made in all our centres bring our vision for outdoor activity centres closer.’
A winning partnership
Both Great Tower and Woodhouse Park have been delivering residential and adventure activity opportunities to Scouting for many years and this has only been possible with the help, support and hard work of countless volunteers.
All of our Scout Activity Centres operate thanks to the volunteers who, working alongside paid staff, regularly give their time and support. We are looking forward to developing the sites in partnership with them.
We will aim to keep you informed of our future developments, but in the meantime, should you have any enquiries please email the Activity Centres team
