An inspiration to us all
Having checked my blog for me last week, Julie said that I had been much too serious in the past few weeks and should lighten up a little. It’s lucky then that we’ve just had a great weekend visiting two great and very different examples of all that is good in our Movement (also good time to pay a special tribute to our partners and loved ones on St Valentines Day who do so much and put up with much more!).
We enjoyed Basingstoke Gang Show on Friday evening where we saw a cast of 73, all under the age of twenty five, give the audience a first class evening’s entertainment with many incredible performances. The production team and back stage crew of over 100 were justifiably proud as were those of us in the audience.
On Sunday, I was honoured to be presenting certificates at the end of Greater London North’s Southern 50 Challenge where 400 Scouts and leaders in 73 teams from 20 counties as far a field as Devon and North Yorkshire had taken part in either a 30 km, 50 km or 50 mile endurance hike, impressively organised and supported by a team of over 100 members.
Two very different events, but both demonstrating what we mean by “everyday adventure”. Whether they were novices taking part on stage or participating in Southern 50 for the first time or had taken in part in both before, they were demonstrating the benefits of teamwork and personal commitment.
They also quickly learnt the benefit of good preparation, whether the 5 months of rehearsals for Gang Show or those evenings spent map reading, doing compass work or practicing for the hike – their experiences were so much more enjoyable as a result. Participants and helpers alike are inspirations to us all.
I’ve also had a busy week outside of these, with the Campaigning Deliberative Workshop on Wednesday evening which saw sixty members from a variety of backgrounds looking at potential topics.
Interestingly, the priorities were generally consistent with those identified by 500 members who took part in the recent online survey. A bit more from me on this in the near future. I’ve also managed to catch up with a number of one to one meetings and an induction meeting with more of the recently appointed Trustees.
Sitting at Heathrow airport now catching up and waiting for a plane to Prague, where I’m off to learn about Scouting in the Czech Republic which I look forward to sharing with you next week.
