A great day in West Lancashire celebrating success
As I mentioned on the 24 September, I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon and evening in Leyland, West Lancashire on 17 September celebrating their success in going back over 10,000 members for the first time since 2001.
Perhaps the best way to sum up their success is by quoting from the County Commissioner’s opening comments, when drawing attention to the 5th successive year of growth and the fact that they now have more post-adolescent members (Explorer Scouts) than at any time since 1998, Carl says “can in part be attributed to the opening of 18 new sections and a new Group, more than in any year since 1993.
I am very comfortable to talk about our actual membership so early in this years report. These are firm indicators about the quality of what we do and the progress we are making, not to mention the underlying health of our Scout County. Of course Scouting if it is anything is an organisation about people.
Young people and adults alike vote with their feet”. It is therefore very pleasing to see the number of adults committing to Scouting grow, and enquiries increase from people interested in joining “The Adventure”.
And a quick look at the County’s Annual Report, 2009 gives you a good feel for what just an adventure Scouting in West Lancashire clearly is. You very quickly get the idea that they take supporting leaders and with it the development of Scouting in the County very seriously . I was particularly impressed by their dedicated website, which I recommend to anybody interested in understanding how you might develop Scouting in your Region, County, District or Area.
The County have a relatively simple development plan consisting of 12 strands such as supporting Adult Volunteers and ensuring there is a 6 to 14 year provision in every group. They also make the most of their proximity to the Lake District and have a very strong Activities Team and rolling programme of international activities, and are planning an International Camp for 2010.
Above all else Scouting in West Lancashire exudes confidence, they are clearly enjoying themselves and have a clear view of where they are going and how to get there.
A most enjoyable day and evening.
