Chair Awards Advisory Group

This an exciting opportunity for a new Chair to join The Scout Association’s new Awards Advisory Group.

During 2017 a review group was formed to look at The Scout Association’s Award processes, based on feedback from members about the complexity of the processes undertaken.

Following consultation, recommendations were approved in December 2017 to make changes to the Award processes and to change the way Awards are supported at a National level.

This role will be pivotal in the shaping and creation of the new Awards Advisory Group and the implementation of the changes to the Award processes.

The purpose of the Awards Advisory Group is to;

  • proactively support The Scout Association’s Award schemes, National Honours and other external award schemes
  • to provide advice, support and guidance to local Scouting for Awards and Recognition of Service
  • to consider applications for specific awards and make recommendations to the Chief Scout for those awards
  • to monitor rules and procedures concerning Awards and Recognition of Service and make appropriate recommendations through the Operations Committee  


The purpose of this role is to chair the Awards Advisory Group to ensure the Group meets its purpose.

Key tasks:

  • Chairing Awards Advisory Group meetings.
  • Reviewing and making decisions on award applications.
  • Ensuring support is provided to local Scouting regarding Reward and Recognition by providing advice, support and guidance material, webinars, conferences and events.
  • Ensuring rules and procedures regarding Awards and Recognition of Service are current and relevant, with any changes being recommended to the Operations Committee.
  • Ensuring the promotion of external awards and National Honours.
  • Ensuring an annual report is provided to Operations Committee. 


As this is a new group a meeting schedule has not been set, however it is expected that there will be approx. 4-6 weekend meetings/events (one day of the weekend in most cases) per year. Monthly conference calls to discuss award applications and time spent reviewing award applications and providing support to members of the group and the organisation. 

Terms of appointment:

Initial length of appointment three years term with a possibility of a further extension of up to three years.

All members of the Awards Advisory Group are required to be a member or associate member of The Scout Association.

This is a voluntary membership role and is unremunerated, however, reasonable expenses in line with the Association’s Expenses Policy will be paid.

The closing date for nominations is Sunday 25th March at midday. Interviews will take place between 3rd April and 14th April 2018. Arrangements will be made with individual candidates following shortlisting.
